Dead Rat and Mouse Odor Removal in San Antonio
Nobody forgets this smell. It's sweet, rotten and heavy, and it's usually strongest in one room or one closet. In a San Antonio summer, with the attic baking, it gets bad fast. The most common cause is a rat that ate poison and then crawled into a wall or under the insulation to die.
The smell will fade on its own eventually, but it can take weeks, and it draws flies. Most people would rather have someone find the body and get it out.
How a Tech Finds It
It takes a nose and some patience. The tech starts where the smell is strongest and works outward, checking the attic above the room, the wall cavities near plumbing, the crawl space below if the house has one, and inside cabinets and behind appliances. Flies gathering at a light fixture or a wall outlet are a good clue. Sometimes they have to open a small hole in the drywall, and they should tell you before they do.
After It's Out
Once the body is out, the spot gets cleaned and treated with an enzyme product that breaks down what soaked into the wood or insulation. If more than one rodent died, or there's a nest nearby, that's a sign the house still has an active problem. Ask about trapping and sealing so you're not back here in a month.

Why We Don't Like Poison Indoors
Loose bait inside a house is the main reason people end up with dead rats in the walls. Snap traps in the attic and locked bait stations outside avoid most of that. The pets and kids guide explains how bait should be handled.
Questions From Callers
How long will the smell last if I leave it?
It depends on the size of the animal and the heat. A mouse may fade in a week or two. A rat can take longer. Removal is faster.
Will air freshener help?
It covers the smell for a few minutes. It won't fix it.
