Rodent Control in Boerne, Texas

Boerne is the county seat of Kendall County, up I-10 northwest of San Antonio. German settlers founded it in the mid-1800s, and Main Street still has limestone buildings from that era along with shops and restaurants. Cibolo Creek winds through town, Boerne City Lake sits to the north, and the hills around it are cedar, live oak and limestone.

Lots of people here live on acreage with barns, workshops and stored equipment, which gives rodents more places to hide than a city lot.

Barns, feed and equipment

Horse feed, deer corn and bird seed are everywhere in the Hill Country, and all of it feeds rodents. Store it in metal bins with tight lids. Woodrats build in barns and under trailers. Mice nest in stored tractors and the air filter boxes of mowers. Walk your outbuildings monthly and look for droppings and nest piles. See pack rat removal if you find a stick nest.

Old stone and new builds

Older stone buildings downtown have mortar gaps and old openings. Newer homes on acreage have long rooflines with big oaks overhead, which is how roof rats get up. Ask for an inspection that covers the main house and every outbuilding, including any guest house or pool house tucked under the trees.

Cold snaps and Hill Country weather

Boerne sits higher and farther into the Hill Country than San Antonio, and it gets more cold nights. When a hard front comes through, mice and deer mice move into garages, barns and houses quickly. Before winter, replace worn garage door seals, put sweeps on side doors, and close gaps where water and electric lines enter outbuildings. Deer mice droppings should be cleaned with the wet method, since the CDC names deer mice as the main hantavirus carrier in the U.S.
