Rodent Control Near Woodlawn Lake and Jefferson
Woodlawn Lake Park sits on the near West Side, a lake ringed by a walking path, ball fields and old trees. North of it, the Jefferson area grew up around Thomas Jefferson High School, the Spanish-style campus that opened in the early 1930s. Fredericksburg Road runs along the east side through the Deco District, named for its Art Deco storefronts and signs.
The houses around here run from 1920s bungalows to post-war ranch homes, many on piers and many on early slabs, with mature trees in most yards.
Lakeside rats and older yards
The lake and its drainage give Norway rats water and cover, and people feeding ducks and geese leave bread and grain on the ground. Homes close to the park see more burrows along fences and under sheds. Fruit trees, chicken coops and compost piles in backyards add food.
Up high, roof rats use the big trees to reach roofs. Older homes with wood siding and gable vents give them easy spots to get in.
Shops on Fredericksburg Road
The Deco District and the stretch of Fredericksburg Road around it have small restaurants, bakeries and shops in older buildings. Shared walls and alleys let rodents move between businesses. Owners can set up regular commercial service with outside stations and a log for the health inspector.

Post-war ranch homes
North and west of the lake, the bungalows give way to post-war ranch houses on early slabs, many with brick or stone veneer and attached carports or garages. Those homes have weep holes, old garage doors and attic vents that have been painted over and cracked. Mice use the low gaps and roof rats use the vents. Screening weep holes and replacing garage door seals takes care of most of the low entry points.

Questions from this part of town
Does feeding ducks at the lake bring rats?
Bread and grain left on the ground feed rats as well as birds. It's one reason homes near the park see more Norway rats.
My house is on an early slab. Where do mice get in?
Usually at the garage door, dryer vent and gaps where pipes and lines go through the wall. See mouse control.
