Emergency Rat and Mouse Removal in San Antonio

Some rodent problems can wait for a Tuesday appointment. A rat running across the living room floor at 9 p.m. isn't one of them. Neither is a mouse in a baby's room, a rat that got into the pantry of a restaurant on a Friday, or a flooded backyard that pushed Norway rats into the garage.

When you call, say up front that it's urgent and what's happening. The provider who takes the call can tell you how soon a technician can get there. Same-day appointments are often available, though nobody can promise a time until they know where you are and what's going on.

  • A live rat or mouse in a bedroom, kitchen or living area
  • Rodents in a room with an infant, an elderly person or someone with breathing problems
  • Fresh droppings on counters, in a crib or in food
  • Gnawing on wiring you can hear or see
  • A rodent in a business during open hours

What to do while you wait

If a rat is loose in a room, close the doors to that room and put a rolled towel at the bottom of the door. Open an outside door or window in that room if it's safe, and leave the room quiet. Rats want out as much as you want them out. Keep kids and pets away. Don't corner it or try to hit it. A cornered rat can bite.

If it's mice, put food away in sealed containers, wipe counters, and set a couple of snap traps along the wall where you've seen them. Keep traps out of reach of children and pets, or set them inside a closed box with a mouse-sized hole.

  • Shut the door to the room and block the gap under it
  • Move pets and kids to another part of the house
  • Put food, pet food and fruit bowls away
  • Don't spread loose poison around to get a quick fix
  • Note where you saw it and where it went

What a thorough emergency visit includes

An emergency visit should still be a real visit. The technician deals with the animal you can see, then looks for how it got in. Removing one rat without closing the gap usually means another one by the weekend.

  • Catching or trapping the rodent in the living space
  • A quick check of the attic, garage and kitchen for more activity
  • Finding and temporarily closing the opening it used
  • Setting traps in the right spots for the next few days
  • A plan and price for follow-up sealing if the house needs it

Step by step after the first visit

Most emergency calls turn into a short regular job. The first visit handles the crisis. Within a few days the technician comes back to check traps and look at the roofline or foundation in daylight. Then comes sealing the entry points, and if droppings got into living areas, a droppings cleanup. Ask how many visits the price covers before you agree.

What to tell the provider on the phone

A clear description gets you a faster, better answer. Say whether it's a rat or a mouse if you know, which room it's in, whether the door is closed, and whether anyone at home is very young, elderly or sick. Mention pets. Give your cross streets or ZIP code. If it's a business, say whether you're open and whether food was exposed. Then ask for the earliest arrival time and the price for the first visit.

Why emergencies happen here

A few San Antonio patterns cause a lot of urgent calls. Heavy rain floods creek banks and drainage channels, and Norway rats that lived in those burrows head for higher ground, often a garage or a crawl space. A hard cold front sends roof rats and mice deeper into a house for a few days, and that's when people see them in the kitchen for the first time.

Construction is another trigger. When brush is cleared for a new subdivision out past 1604, the rats and woodrats living there scatter into the nearest houses. And in summer, a rat that came in for water sometimes ends up in a kitchen or a bathroom instead of staying in the attic.

Questions from callers

Can someone come tonight?

Sometimes. Providers keep their own hours, and same-day appointments are often available. Say it's urgent when you call so they can tell you the earliest time.

Is an emergency visit more expensive?

It can be. Some providers charge more for evenings and weekends. Ask for the price before the technician comes out.

A rat bit someone. What do I do?

Wash the wound with soap and water and call a doctor or urgent care. Rat bites can cause infection. Then deal with the rat.

Should I put out poison right away?

No. Loose poison inside the house can reach kids and pets, and a poisoned rat can die in a wall. Traps and a closed door are safer while you wait.

Do you handle squirrels or raccoons in an emergency?

No. This line is rats, mice and pack rats only. For other animals, call a wildlife removal company.
